Saying Goodbye to 3G: Why 4G and 5G?

Why Mobile Networks are Focusing on 4G and 5G in 2025 with Mobile Compare
Thursday, November 21, 2024

In 2025, mobile network providers in New Zealand will be shutting down their 3G services for good. It’s exciting to see our digital world expand and move forward, putting the building blocks in for our future. It means we can continue to meet our goals and needs for speed, reliability and capability.

Why No More 3G?

3G was a world-changing generation of mobile cellular technology. It launched in 2001, bringing speeds of 7 Mbps to users, adequate for basic video streaming. When 3G arrived on the market, mobile providers began offering mobile data services, enabling people to enjoy social media scrolling, music listening and email sending on-the-go. While 3G was incredible for our digital development at the time, our demand and online needs have grown. We now need faster and more reliable mobile data. That is where 4G and 5G come in! Mobile network providers in New Zealand are going to be focusing on 4G and 5G. Here is why!

Faster Speeds

Both 4G and 5G networks deliver super fast speeds. 4G speeds are perfect for a better streaming experience, helping to eliminate buffering and lagging. You can even enjoy HD streaming with this network. 4G is also perfect for video calling, allowing you to jump on team meetings, or simply catch up with the family group chat from any part of the country.

5G is an even more incredible service. It allows you to stream 4K videos. You can download videos in just seconds, perfect for when you are about to board that flight and wish to watch your favourite show to pass the time!

Lower Latency

Latency is a term to describe the amount of time it takes to send and receive data. In a world where we are often calling loved ones and colleagues, or jumping into an online game, having “in real-time” communication is vital. 4G and 5G networks have an incredible low latency, meaning there is very, very little time between sending and receiving data.

Better Bandwidth and Reliability

With a higher bandwidth than their predecessors, 4G and 5G networks can handle more data flowing through them at the same time. So, in busy areas or at busy times of the day, you don’t have to worry about buffering or lagging, empowering you to complete that tik tok video, submit that assignment, or jump on that exciting team call without interruption or slowing down.
